The Quiet Before the Bell

On Saturday morning, Maya stood backstage at the county speech competition. She felt anxious as she listened to applause shake the auditorium walls. What if she forgot her opening or dropped her note cards? Usually, Maya was sociable and chatted easily with anyone in the hallway. Today, however, she avoided the other speakers and stared at her shoes. Their polished voices made her feel insecure about her own small, shaky sound, but her teacher, Mr. Chen, noticed and sat beside her.

Mr. Chen offered sensible advice: plant both feet, breathe slowly, and focus on one friendly face. Maya practiced the steps, and her shoulders began to loosen. Still, she was hesitant when an organizer called her name. She took one step, stopped, and nearly turned toward the exit. Then another contestant smiled, raised a thumb, and whispered, "You know your story." Maya wanted to blurt that she knew nothing at all, but instead she thanked him and walked toward the bright stage.

At the microphone, Maya looked at the judges and prepared to narrate a true event from her life. She began with the day her little brother vanished at a crowded fair. Her first words trembled, but the story soon carried her forward. She described checking each ride and asking adults for help, then reached the moment she found him beside the ticket booth. "I will never let go of your hand again," she had declared, and he stopped crying because her steady promise made him believe her. Blaming him would not have been mature. He was only six, and she should have watched him carefully.

When Maya finished, the room stayed silent for one long second, and then her brother jumped from his seat. "You did it!" he exclaimed, waving both arms with joy. Laughter and applause rolled across the room, and Maya finally smiled. She did not win, but the judges praised her honest details. Backstage, she joined the other students and asked about their speeches, for the nervous knot inside her was gone.
