Stitches Before Saturday

On Monday, Ms. Rivera rolled donated cloth into Room 12, and the abundant scraps spilled over both cutting tables. Maya chose navy fabric for a night-sky quilt, while Eli gathered gold prints. They measured each strip with the decimal marks on a meter ruler. Every quilt block began as a quadrilateral, but the piles became crooked. To keep the bundles sorted, Maya had to abbreviate the long color names on labels.

By Tuesday, two rival designs hung on the wall. One showed a moon above rooftops, and the other showed a field of stars. The class stood back to compare the pinned plans before voting. Jonah favored the stars because he had checked their pattern through his telescope. Lena liked the roofs, but she agreed to add stars nearby. Eli trimmed each corner into a triangle, but one slipped under his sleeve and made everyone search until he raised his arm.

Thursday brought trouble, and Ms. Rivera said the final sewing session's duration could stretch from lunch until supper. Maya pinned a blue hexagon at the center of the sky. Lena moved it, since it seemed too bold beside the roofs. Maya snapped that Lena kept changing everything. For a quiet minute, only scissors clicked. Then Jonah placed the two choices together, and the blue patch balanced the silver stars. Lena nodded, and Maya apologized. They pinned the rows and began feeding them through the sewing machine.

On Friday afternoon, the last border lay loose. The machine jammed, so Eli pulled a knot of thread while the others held the quilt flat. Ms. Rivera fixed the bobbin, and the class worked through recess. At last, Maya tied the final stitch. They carried the quilt to the gym just as vendors opened their booths. Under the fair lights, the dark cloth shimmered like water. A family bought it before dinner, and the class cheered when the fundraiser jar filled.
