The Lantern Captain

In Coral Cove, Mira was an octopus who dreamed of leading the yearly Tide Parade. She aspired to become parade captain, and she practiced commands beside her den each morning. She wanted to replace an old custom: every captain had always been a strong, swift dolphin. One afternoon, an anonymous note appeared under the council shell, signed only, “A Friend.” It urged the elders to let any sea creature compete for the role.

The contest began with a bizarre obstacle course through crooked pipes and clouds of purple mud. Mira finished first, then began to boast that no dolphin could match her clever arms. She also pestered the judges for an early decision, returning again and again with the same demand. At last, Elder Ray said, “Skill does not permit a captain to treat neighbors poorly.” Mira flushed dark red, but she promised to wait for the final trial.

That night, a fever struck the young fish who carried lanterns. Dolphins were immune because the illness did not affect their kind, but Mira could still catch it. The parade teams argued about canceling the celebration. Elder Ray stayed neutral and refused to favor Mira or the dolphins. Instead, he asked both sides to suggest a fair plan. Mira showed courage by entering the sick fish’s cave, though her arms trembled at the doorway. She brought medicine and hung the lanterns herself.

By sunrise, Mira had arranged every lantern along the reef. The dolphins admitted that her actions mattered more than speed. Mira admitted that her proud words had made teamwork harder. When the council named her captain, she thanked everyone instead of praising herself. She also confessed that she had written the unsigned note. Elder Ray smiled because her idea had been sound. Still, he did not approve of her secrecy. Under Mira’s direction, dolphins pulled floats, crabs beat drums, and eels lit the route. Coral Cove then chose captains by service, and Mira never forgot why.
