The Silver Key

Milo the duck lived behind the kitchen of an old country house. He often watched the family, but they rarely noticed his quiet adventures. One rainy afternoon, a silver key vanished from Mrs. Bell's sewing basket. Milo saw a thread leading toward the attic stairs. He felt hopeful that he could find the key and earn her trust. The narrow steps were dusty, and gray powder puffed beneath his feet.

Milo began to waddle upward, rocking past boxes and rolled carpets. A sudden bang above made him flap both wings and bump the wall. He was a clumsy climber, so a framed picture slipped behind him. It did not break, but its fall revealed a tiny chalk arrow. Milo gave the mark his full attention and studied where it pointed. The arrow aimed at a tall chest beneath the round window.

Before crossing the weak floor, Milo pulled a candle and string from his pouch. He had come prepared, since old attics often held loose boards and dark corners. The chest would not open, though the silver key seemed likely to be inside. Carved across its lid was a riddle: "I have teeth but never bite." Milo thought of wolves, saws, and zippers while rain tapped the roof. Then he spotted a wooden comb beside a cracked mirror. When he pressed it into a comb-shaped slot, the chest clicked open.

A mouse leaped from the chest, and Milo stumbled backward in surprise. His candle began to tumble end over end toward a pile of cloth. Milo lunged and stopped it with one broad foot before flames could spread. Behind him, the floorboards began to creak, sending a thin squeal through the attic. The mouse dropped the missing key beside a nest of blue thread. Milo carried it downstairs, along with the clue that had solved the mystery. Mrs. Bell smiled, tied a green ribbon around his neck, and filled his bowl with corn. Milo had entered the attic as an awkward duck, but he returned as the house detective.
