Life Under Glass
On Monday, four students entered the abandoned greenhouse behind their school. They came to investigate why insects and plants were thriving inside. They wanted to learn which conditions made the space a good habitat. Warm, humid air fogged their glasses as soon as the door closed. A grimy film covered the glass roof, so little sunlight reached the floor. Their teacher, Ms. Chen, asked them to record every living thing they found. Each team carried a notebook, ruler, camera, and flashlight for the survey.
First, Maya and Luis began to inspect the benches beside the west wall. They lifted each pot carefully and checked the soil, leaves, and stems. One pot cracked in Maya's hands because its brittle clay had weakened. Beneath it, a slender mushroom rose from a cushion of green moss. Its stem was thinner than a pencil. Tiny flies circled its cap, while pale worms twisted in the damp soil. The students photographed the mushroom but left it undisturbed for later study.
Across the aisle, Nia noticed a tattered shade cloth hanging above a water tank. Its ragged holes let narrow beams of light fall onto the water. A speckled frog rested on a pipe, with brown spots scattered across its back. When Nia stepped closer, it slipped behind the tank without a splash. The team waited quietly and watched it prowl along the dark edge. It crept from pipe to pipe, searching for flies near the surface.
Back at the center table, the camera proved to be an important resource for the survey. Its images let the students confirm details they had missed in the shadows. They also compared the tank area with a dry corner near the door. Near the tank, they counted six insect kinds, but the corner held only two. A slow leak had kept the moss wet and filled shallow pools below. Ms. Chen explained that water and cover helped more species survive in that spot. Their notes would help the school plan a safe repair of the building.
