A Better Ending

On Tuesday afternoon, Lena hurried to the library for her appointment with Mr. Vale. They had agreed to meet at four o'clock, and she arrived with one minute to spare. She found him at a corner table beside a stack of grammar books. Her backpack held a clutter of bent papers, snack wrappers, and loose pencils. She dug through the mess until she found her draft. The pages held her first attempt at an essay about rescuing a lost dog.

Mr. Vale glanced at the opening paragraph, reading it for only a few seconds. “The idea is clear,” he said, “but every sentence must earn its place.” Lena knew he was fussy about details. A weak verb or a missing comma could make him tap the page with his red pen. He asked her to consider why the dog had followed the hero. Lena thought carefully, then added the smell of bacon from the hero’s lunch. That detail made the scene feel less convenient and more believable.

Next, Mr. Vale pointed to a long sentence and asked Lena to read it aloud. She stumbled over “extraordinary” and could not pronounce the middle sounds clearly. Heat rose into her cheeks, so she began to mumble behind her hand. Mr. Vale leaned closer and asked her to speak loudly enough for him to hear. He did not scold her for the mistake or snap about her nervous habit. Instead, he divided the hard word into parts and clapped once for each part. Lena tried again, and this time every sound came out clean.

During the next hour, Lena's feelings swung from hope to annoyance, then back again. Mr. Vale called her moody after three quick changes, but his smile softened the comment. She grew stubborn about her ending and refused to change one line. When she compared it with the strong opening, however, the ending seemed flat. Lena sighed, replaced two sentences, and packed the improved essay at five o'clock.
