Signal in the Storm
Each evening, Mara Bell climbed the lighthouse tower before the sun touched the sea. She checked the lamp, cleaned the glass, and kept a steady tempo as darkness gathered. Below, a radio receiver played the audio from a weather buoy beyond the reef. A monotone voice recited wind speeds and was barely audible above the wind. One October night, an abrupt burst of clicks replaced it. Then a broken voice said, “Research boat Gull, drifting north.” Mara reached for her raincoat as the signal vanished.
On the beach, her lantern revealed an orange raft tossing between black rocks. Mara waded out, planted her boots, and used a boat hook to capture its trailing rope. The flexible line bent around a post without snapping. Inside the raft, a young man lay still with blood on his sleeve. His eyes stayed shut even when Mara shouted and shook his shoulder. Fearing a coma, she dragged him toward the lighthouse. The storm would detain them there until the rescue boat could cross the reef.
The stranger stirred beside the kitchen stove and whispered that his name was Ivo. He had come to conduct a monthlong survey of whale calls, but a wave had swept him overboard. His crewmate, Sana, was still on the Gull. The cut on his arm was deep and streaked with dirty seawater. Following a Coast Guard medic's directions, Mara cleaned it and used the emergency syringe to inject an antibiotic. Soon Ivo could sit upright, and he began to devour a bowl of hot stew.
Ivo opened his waterproof laptop while Mara adjusted the buoy receiver. He played a ten-second sample from the hour before the wreck. Under the whale calls hid a repeated scrape, perhaps the Gull's damaged propeller. They magnified the sound pattern on the screen, and its faint marks grew tall enough to compare. “Finding that boat is like following a thread through a maze,” Mara said. Her metaphor made Ivo smile. Before studying oceans, he had studied philosophy and argued about what one mind could truly know.
Another burst reached them, and Sana's hysterical voice rose into sobs and wild cries. Ivo joked that Mara must possess telepathy because she had guessed Sana's thoughts before any clear words arrived. Mara pointed instead to the changing pace of the propeller scrape as the Gull neared the northern rocks. She composed a short rescue message with their best estimate and sent it to the Coast Guard. At dawn, a cutter appeared through the rain and found Sana. The lighthouse beam swept over calm water, and Mara finally slowed her steps.
