The Ridge Vote

At dawn, twelve climbers left their high camp and started up Mount Arlen. Mara, their leader, had promised clear skies, but dark clouds soon covered the ridge. The radio crackled with a concise warning from base camp: turn around before noon. Some climbers could not comprehend the danger because the air below them seemed calm. Then a sheet of snow slid across the path and erased their tracks.

Mara gathered the team behind a wall of ice. Her deputy, Dax, tried to intimidate the others into following him upward. He called anyone who turned back a coward. Mara was frank with the group. She admitted that she had missed signs of the storm. Instead of giving another order, she chose to empower each climber to vote. Seven wanted to wait, while five wished to withdraw from the climb.

Their oldest guide, Niko, found a narrow cave near the ridge. Reaching it meant crossing the slide one at a time. Niko made a sacrifice for the team. He gave up his warm spare gloves so a climber with frozen fingers could hold the rope. By afternoon, the wind weakened and blue sky opened above them. Mara studied the slope and drew a safer route away from the loose snow. The team voted again, and this time everyone chose to continue together.

They climbed through the night under a magnificent field of stars. Near sunrise, Mara stepped onto the summit, and the others joined her beside the flag. The view was indescribable. Golden peaks rolled toward every horizon, and clouds glowed far below. The climbers were elated, yet no one cheered for long. They remembered the slide, Niko's cold hands, and the hard vote in the cave. Mara thanked them for trusting one another. She also promised that every future plan would leave room for honest doubts. Together they began the careful descent, carrying more than a flag. They carried proof that strong leadership could listen, change, and still reach the top.
