Beneath the Green Canopy

At sunrise, Dr. Mara Chen led six students into the Orinoco rainforest. Their trek would last five days and cross steep, muddy ground. The forest was lush after weeks of rain, with vines hanging over the trail. Numerous parrots filled the canopy, and their calls came from every direction. Mara asked everyone to concentrate as they recorded each sound and color. The team moved slowly, filling its notebooks before the morning heat grew heavy.

Near a creek, the group found fresh soil beside a fallen log. A striped armadillo began to burrow there, pushing dirt backward with strong claws. The students watched until it vanished below the roots. Farther ahead, floodwater covered the wooden bridge and rushed between its rails. Their guide chose a detour over higher ground to avoid the flood. This path added two miles, but it led past a pool of orchids. Their fragrant blossoms scented the damp air and drew green bees.

By afternoon, the team reached a former research camp beside a broad river. Scientists had left it years ago, and moss now covered the empty huts. Inside one hut, Mara found a sizable map that covered most of a table. It showed an old canoe route toward a ridge where monkeys often fed. The group repaired a small boat, then paddled through calm water. Along the bank, spider monkeys shook branches and dropped half-eaten fruit. Those scraps fed fish below and helped new trees spread downstream.

On the final morning, Mara collected water from a shaded pond. A hand lens revealed microscopic creatures drifting among grains of sand. They were hard to see, yet their quick movements showed a busy hidden world. Nearby, the students measured giant leaves and sketched beetles with golden shells. Rain began before noon, so the team packed its samples in dry bags. The return climb was tiring, but no one complained about the steep slope. Back at the station, every notebook held evidence from the journey. The expedition tested their tired legs and rewarded their patient, careful eyes.
