Rather than presume perfidy by the supplier, Chen ordered chemical assays and repeated thermal scans. During overnight testing, Chen was abstemious at the team's snack table, keeping coffee and celebration modest so fatigue would not blur her readings. A complaisant junior analyst was ready to approve the replacement batch merely to satisfy the schedule. Meanwhile, the vendor's unctuous representative praised everyone's brilliance while pressing them to overlook the cropped data. Chen refused to coerce the analyst by threatening his fellowship; instead, she required an independent test that everyone could inspect. To Chen's chagrin, the first full-scale antenna still opened unevenly in vacuum, forcing another redesign. An anodyne status note might have hidden the setback, but her report documented the failure and traced it to uneven heating near a mounting bolt. After insulation distributed heat more uniformly, the antenna deployed through two hundred cycles. Reviewers commended the team's candor and rigor, though Chen rejected a proposed panegyric celebrating a “miracle metal.” The alloy remembered nothing; its reversible crystal structures simply made a well-engineered return possible.
