Velez objected that concealing a known bias would be a scientific transgression, because researchers depended on the published uncertainty estimates. After the reviewers reproduced the sunlight pattern from archived data, board members assented to the ground campaign and authorized three months of observations.
A beneficent foundation that supplied free flood-warning equipment to vulnerable coastal towns offered its high-altitude observatory for the campaign and paid local technicians. Its plain concrete laboratory contrasted sharply with the opulence of a contractor's nearby retreat, where guests crossed a marble atrium beneath crystal chandeliers before entering private dining rooms. That contrast sharpened questions about priorities, but Velez kept the investigation focused on radiance measurements rather than institutional appearances. Nightly tests compared the orbiting scanner with chilled reference panels, while balloon instruments sampled the same columns of air.
The evidence showed that a protective filter expanded slightly under solar heating, shifting the detector's response without permanently damaging it. Doran would not capitulate until Velez agreed to preserve the raw record, publish both correction methods, and review the model after one year. Once those terms were written into the plan, he withdrew his opposition and helped calculate a temperature-dependent adjustment. Ground commands then recalibrated Aurora-6 without touching its hardware, and subsequent ship comparisons fell within the expected range.
